Environment Day 2024 brought young Armenian people together to advocate for positive environmental actions and solutions. This event successfully engaged around 60 participants, fostering a deeper understanding of water ecosystem conservation among young people.
The event was organized by the NGO “Environment and Health” supported by the EU4Environment Water and Data programme, in close collaboration with the State Museum of Nature of Armenia SNCO and the RA Ministry of Environment,
Competition
To celebrate this event, a competition was organised, called "River’s Layout Model from Waste" competition, which ran from May 6 to May 20. The competition encouraged students to visit local rivers, assess their ecological status, identify pollution sources, and create river models using waste materials. The models were to reflect the hydromorphological format of the river sections studied, highlighting areas of pollution and other environmental observations.
Out of numerous entries, nine groups, each consisting of 4-6 students and a coordinating teacher, were shortlisted. All nine groups were invited to the State Museum of Nature of Armenia to participate in an awareness-raising seminar.
Seminar Highlights
Held on Environment Day, the seminar began with an introduction to the Global Network of Water Museums and the functions and significance of its eight member museums. Mrs. Lilit Galstyan, Director of the State Museum of Nature of Armenia, shared the museum’s history, its mission, and its vital role in environmental education.
Participants engaged in discussions about the importance of river and lake ecosystems, presenting their river models and discussing the environmental issues faced in their communities. The seminar concluded with a museum tour and a lunch break, providing a platform for students to connect and learn in an interactive environment.
