What are water accounts?
Water accounts show the transfer of water between natural water resources (e.g. groundwater, rivers and atmosphere), individual economic sectors and private households. They make it easy to see what quantity of water is needed by which economic sector. They can provide a basis for decisions on the allocation of water quantities to economic sectors, especially in arid and semi-arid areas where water is limited.
In Ukraine, knowledge on water accounts is limited. There is considerable large number of national authorities and their regional departments collecting and keeping data relevant for water accounts. A water balance is prepared and disseminated by the state agency of water resources.
The EU4Environment – Water and Data programme supports the further development of water accounts to use the knowledge for water resources management.
